Family Tree Maker by Ancestry . com was my first software purchase. It was awful and resulted in 2 completely wrecked trees. No hard feelings because I learned to be much more careful with syncing and backing up family tree data. Ancestry . com dropped FTM, another company Mackiev picked it up and improved it a lot I think, especially for Macs. When ancestry . com dropped FTM other genealogy software was offered at super low prices.
RootsMagic was my second software purchase and it’s awesome. It looks like 1995 but is wonderfully pleasant to use and seems easier (than FTM) to work through and figure out. RootsMagic also connects well with FamilySearch.org. Recently Ancestry . com sync was added but I’m not using it, Ancestry . com is to unstable, I think.
MacFamilyTree was my third software purchase. MFT is of the future. The charts are gorgeous. There is an interactive tree. I can listen to narratives on my ancestors. MFT is the final frontier for my tree and once (or if) I get the tree somewhat polished I’ll import to MFT.
